OBU Parents’ Day Holds Many Events

Fall is blooming. Cooler weather comes, and students prepare for mid-term exams. It is also a time when parents return to Bison Hill for a visit.

OBU Parents’ Day 2005 is Oct. 1, and the slate is full of activities for parents and students to enjoy.

“Most parents come at the beginning of the semester, when things on campus are chaotic with students moving into the dorms, but Parents’ Day is always a good time when parents can come and spend time on campus with their son or daughter,” said Bobby Canty, OBU dean of students.

Beginning with registration at 10:30 a.m., the day features Kids’ College, which has special activities for younger siblings, ages 6-12. Both students and parents can meet with professors at 11 a.m. in Geiger Center, rooms 219-220, and then have lunch in the Laura Scales Cafeteria at noon.

A special campus worship service begins at 2 p.m. in Geiger Center, rooms 218-219, and several administrators will be present to meet with parents at the conclusion of the service. The residence halls will be open for family members to visit from 3:30-5 p.m.

Afternoon activities include the OBU men’s and women’s soccer teams battling Oklahoma Christian University. The women’s game begins at noon, with the men’s game following at 2 p.m.

The W.P. Wood Planetarium will feature two presentations. Cowboy poet Baxter Black will narrate an entertaining show called Cowboy Astronomer at 3:30 p.m. Skywatchers of Africa follows at 4:30 p.m., presenting several cultures from across the African continent and highlighting their relationships with the cosmos. Observers can learn how Africans used their astronomical observations to help them grow food, tell time, find their way through harsh lands and mold their spiritual lives.

Parents’ Day concludes with Freshman Follies, the annual freshmen variety show sponsored by Campus Activities Board, at 8 p.m. in Raley Chapel.
