"Researchers and scholars have proven that music is indeed a separate intelligence and it is crucial that students be exposed to music early in life to develop that important part of the brain."
With that importance placed on music and development, Conchita Hansford, director of Oklahoma Baptist Universityís Music Preparatory Department, has led creation of a robust program for musicians of all ages.
"Students who study music tend to perform better at spatial-temporal tasks and score higher in academics," said Hansford. "The benefits are helpful for all age groups. Adults also are encouraged to participate in our departmentís offerings."
The OBU Preparatory Department is currently accepting registrations for fall courses. Students can enroll in a variety of vocal or instrumental classes. Classes begin on August 24. To register, or for more details, call Hansford at 405-878-2319 or 273-2273.
The department also offers Young Singers of Oklahoma, three auditioned choirs for students in grades 4 through 12. Choir auditions are scheduled for August 18, 19 and 22, from 3-5 p.m. in OBUís Raley Chapel, rooms 129 and 143. No appointments or advance preparations are necessary for choir auditions. A non-auditioned Apprentice Choir for children in grades 2-6 also is available.
The Music Preparatory Department began in 1985, designed to offer musical opportunities to students in Shawnee and surrounding areas. The department is the largest of its kind in the state, with more than 400 students presently enrolled. It has served as a model for several other universities in developing similar programs.
