Dr. John Nichols, associate professor of mathematics at Oklahoma Baptist University, recently worked as a software engineering consultant for the software quality division of Employer's Reinsurance Company (ERC).
ERC is a subsidiary of General Electric, located in Overland Park, Kan.
While at ERC, Nichols assisted in the establishment of a software quality assurance program. He wrote plans and procedures to help improve the quality of the Internet software products that ERC is developing to support its field agents. Nichols also wrote training materials.
He developed a requirements management document, a software quality assurance plan and a configuration management plan.
This summer was the second time that Nichols has worked as a software engineering consultant for GE. In the summer of 1998, Nichols wrote test plans and procedures for the General Electric Aircraft Engine Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility in Strother, Kan.
"A short summer project with GE is an outstanding way to keep myself current within the software industry and to see how mathematics is used with the industry," Nichols said. "I picked up many great examples of statistical applications from my time at GEAE."
Nichols and his wife Edna have two children attending OBU, Chris a senior and Cynthia a junior.
