Ghost Play Opens OBU Theatre Season
September 18, 2000
Oklahoma Baptist University's theatre department is creating a shroud of mystery over their first production of the fall, a ghost play with undisclosed cast members and eerie plot twists.
OBU's production of "The Woman in Black," adapted for the stage by Stephen Malatratt, will be Sept. 21-23 and Sept. 28-30, at 7:30 p.m. in Sarkeys Theatre.
Theatre majors Brandon Roye, junior, and Lucas Roeschely, sophomore theatre major, are the castmembers for the two-act play. The third castmember will remain unnamed until the performances.
Director Heather Carman, senior theatre major, first saw a production of "The Woman in Black" in London when she attended OBU's overseas theatre studies class during the January term.
The play, which is based on a novel by Susan Hill, is hailed as one of London's best-loved and longest running plays.
Carman is directing the play as coursework for the advanced drama class at OBU. She is under the supervision of Dr. Marion Castleberry, director of theatre and associate professor of theatre.
"It's a fun mystery play that has been adapted to the stage from a novel," Castleberry said. "Maybe it's a little scary at moments, but that is all part of the fun."
The fall season and approaching Halloween holiday convinced Carmen that the play was appropriate for the season.
"I think it's a nice change from some of the heavy drama or comedy," Carmen said.
A play within a play, "The Woman in Black" is set in London around the turn of the century.
"I've tried to keep true to what is written in the script," Carman said. "Hopefully we will make it more interesting than a larger production since our space is more intimate.
"There are times in the play when you really have to grab the person next to you," she said. "You get caught up in the story and you can't distinguish what is reality anymore."
General admission tickets are $7. OBU Theatre season passes are available for $25. Reservations can be made by calling OBU's office of communication arts at 878-2347.
