Biography

Dr. Hinson has been leading worship in local churches for over forty years.  He began writing about church music and worship in 1993, and has had articles published in periodicals such as The Choral Journal, Church Musician Today, and the Midwestern Journal of Theology. The latter publication contains his article, "Leadership of the Church Choir: An Examination of the Connection to Biblical and Historical Models with Implications for the 21st Century."

For over seventeen years, he has been the regular writer for the opening article of The Music Stand, a choir directors' quarterly magazine contained in the Glory Songs Kit published by LifeWay Christian Resources. In 2008, Dr. Hinson authored a book chapter entitled "In Defense of Change: Crucible of the Church's Song" which was included in Hymnology in the Service of the Church: Essays in Honor of Harry Eskew. Dr. Hinson presented the peer-reviewed paper, “Baptist Hymnal 2008 as a Window into Baptist Worship Culture” at the Colloquium on Baptist Church Music, sponsored by the Center for Christian Music Studies, Baylor University, September 24-25, 2009. This conference was in honor of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first Baptist church.

He was honored to be the conductor for the 41st Annual Concerto-Aria Concert sponsored by OBU, February 15, 2015. OBU students performed with full orchestra featuring works by Haydn, Mozart, Handel, Massenet, Gershwin, Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro, as well as an original composition by one of the students. Hinson has also served as a field thesis supervisor for the Robert E. Webber Institute of Worship Studies.  He is also a regular faculty member for the Resonate!
