The sips 5k continues to progress in the Shawnee community. All of those who have participated in the event on Monday nights four times since its inception are entitled to a designed t-shirt as a reward.
Matt Bates, senior nursing major and one of the creators of the sips 5k, said that 67 people have qualified for the club t-shirts as of right now, and will be receiving them next Monday, December 12th at 7:15 p.m.
Im really overwhelmed with how the community has received the sips 5k.
Several local businesses contributed a grand total of $500 to fund the costs of creating the club t-shirts. These businesses include First United Bank, Shawnee Foot and Ankle Clinic, LifeStream Acupuncture, Sports Fanatics and Baptist Athletics. The ink, prints and labor are also being donated by Baptist Athletics.
Sips 5k is free to the Shawnee community and offers an opportunity for anyone to go through a course downtown at their own pace. The event claims to be dog friendly, and children may participate as well.
Bates said that in the future they [senior nursing majors] are looking to host a timed 5k in the future with the possibility of prizes. Bates also said that he is looking to put together a board of people to contribute ideas and help maintain the sips 5k project.
Bates said that if any students are interested, to contact him via matthew.bates@my.okbu.
I think Shawnee is a very progressive place, or rather a generational paradigm shift, said Bates.
A community can be an amazing place, but its up to our generation to make it happen.
The sips 5k meets on Monday nights at 6pm.
