SGA vote to change e-mail
December 7, 2011
The OBU campus will shift to a new e-mail system over Christmas Break, Neal Ellis, SGA President, said after a meeting Monday evening. After the complications Groupwise presented, the university began seeking new options for e-mail servers. Once the switch was decided upon, Ellis said he thought it would be a smart idea for the students to join the faculty in their transition.
“I just think it will create better communication between the students and their professors,” Ellis said.
“After faculty e-mail was set to change, SGA thought we should discuss whether or not to keep student e-mail the same. We decided to go ahead and put the entire campus back on the same e-mail system."
Ellis said the new system will go into effect January 1. E-mail addresses will change back to @okbu.edu. Ellis said students should not worry about losing e-mails, however.
“All messages sent to your @my.okbu.edu account will automatically be forward to your new account,” he said.
“This will make access much easier for everyone on campus,” Gary Nickerson, assistant vice president for business affairs information systems and services, said.
“It will improve communication significantly. We know the problems we’ve had this year frustrated the faculty greatly. We are switching to a private, non-profit program through Merritt Networks at Michigan University. The new system is called Zimbra Collaboration Suite,” he said.
Nickerson said students will be notified of the change within the next few days.
