OBU ends season early

The Oklahoma Baptist University women’s soccer team finished its season at the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament last Saturday. The Lady Bison lost the match against Mid-American Christian University, 0-2.
Courtney Anderson had three shots on goal, while Elisa Brito had two shots on goal. Laura Wesevich, Cara Cecil and Maddison Nelson had one shot on goal each. But the MACU keeper Melissa Dobie saved ten shots from the Lady Bison.
Nicole Farquhar scored at the 8th minute and Kassie Byrd added the second goal at the 16th minute from a breakaway one-on-on the OBU keeper in the first half.
The Lady Bison outshot 17-12 but didn’t come up with any goals. OBU finished the season at 8-7-4. It was the last college match for Cecil, Wesevich, Nelson, Kirsten Betterton and Marinne Burnham.
“I would summarize the season as being a season of transition such as transition in coaching staff and transition in positions for many of the players. A lot was asked of this group of ladies, and a lot was given,” Head Coach Mike White said. “I feel we should have scheduled tougher teams in the pre-conference portion of our season. This season we felt pretty good about our play at times but that was usually against weaker opponents. Once we hit the tougher teams I felt like we were back to square one. Only through being challenged consistently will we be able to chart our progress.”
Despite the loss at the first round of the SAC tournament, the Lady Bison had positive experiences with young players. White said he was also satisfied with the result and experiences.
“Through excellent leadership from our seniors, and especially our captains, the team accomplished much,” White said. “The team matched the highest number of shutouts in a season. Also we set the record for fewest goals allowed (18) during the regular season. It was a special group of girls for many reasons.”
In the last match of the regular season, the Lady Bison also fell to Oklahoma City University in overtime, 1-2. Cecil made the game tie at the 57th minute at the second half. But Lady Bison allowed a goal for the Lady Stars at the second overtime with 4:15 left in the match.
Margaret Lee finished the game for the Lady Stars. Even though the Lady Bison out-shot 19-4 in the game but didn’t reach to a win. If the Lady Bison won this match, they could have had the first round SAC Tournament game at the home field in the postseason.
