Helps for On-Campus Computer Users

1. Disable System Restore (Windows XP Users)
If you are running windows XP it is strongly recommended to disable system restore during the scan process.  If you do not, you take the risk of the virus being saved in the system restore directory.  This can allow the virus to come back after a reboot.  It is important to understand that if you decide to turn this off you will lose your restore points. This means you will not be able to go back to any restore points. You can turn it back on after a scan but your restore points will be lost.

a. Go to Start, Control Panel, System, System Restore
b. Check Turn off System Restore
c. Select OK

2. Installing McAfee
OBU provides McAfee version 8 for all on-campus residents.  These CD’s can either be picked up at the computer center (Thurmond Hall) or from a dorm director.  You will be required to sign a license agreement form.  Once you have the CD go through the following steps to clean your system. You will need to be logged in with administrator rights. Important: These instructions assume that you do not have any special configurations on your computer.

a.
Put the CD in the CD-drive.  It should auto-start.  If it does not start go to Start, Run, D:AutorunAutorun.exe (assuming your CD-drive is D:)
b.  Select either VirusScan v4.5.1 for Windows 9x (if you are running Windows 95, 98 or ME) or VirusScan v8.0 for Windows NT/2k/XP (if you are running Windows NT, 2000, or XP)
c. Select Install VirusScan v8.0.
d. Select Next.
e. Read license agreement and then select I accept the terms in the license agreement
f. Select Next.
g. Select Install.
h.
If you are able to access the internet, leave the two boxes checked and click “Finish”.  If you are unable to access the internet uncheck the two boxes, click “Finish” and go to section (3).
i.
It should now download the newest dat file and scan your computer.  If it gives an error downloading the dat file go to section III.  If it does not give an error let it scan your computer and go to section (4).

3. Updating McAfee
a. The dorm director will be given a disk with the newest dat file on it which you can pick up. If they do not have it, you can pick one up from the Computer Center in Thurmond.
b. Put the CD in your CD-drive.  It should auto-start.  If it does not start automatically go to Start, Run, D:update.exe.
c. Select Next.
d. Select Finish.
e. Go to Start, Programs, Network Associates, VirusScan On-Demand Scan.
f. Select Scan Now.

4. Configure McAfee
We
recommend that you set McAfee to auto-update at least once a week if not more.  The following are steps to set this.
a. Go to Start, Programs, Network Associates, VirusScan Console.
b. Double click AutoUpdate.
c. Select Schedule.
d. Select Enable.
e. Select Schedule.
f. Set the Day/Time you want it to update. Keep in mind that it should be a time that your computer is on.

5. Update Windows
Since many viruses found use exploits of Microsoft Windows, we recommend keeping your computer updated.  You will need to be connected to the internet to do this.
a. Go into Internet Explorer.

b. Select Tools, Windows Updates.
c.
Select Scan for updates.
d. After it finishes scanning for updates, select Review and install updates.
e.
Select Install Now.
f. It will now download and install all updates.  You will probably have to reboot your machine at this point.

6. Configure Windows Automatic Updates
We strongly recommend that you set your computer to auto-update. This is supported on both Windows 2000 machines and Windows XP machines.
a. Go to Start, Control Panel, System.

b. Select Automatic Updates.
c. Check Keep my computer up to date.
d.
Select one of the three setting options of how you want the updates handled (We recommend Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed).

7. Run VirusScan
After installing updates it is best to run a full scan on the system.
a. Go to Start, Programs, Network Associates, Virus On-Demand Scan and select Scan Now.
