OBU Track History

Arguably the most successful sport at Oklahoma Baptist University, the Bison and Lady Bison track teams have produced one national team title, nearly 50 national event champions and scores of All-America honors.

The highlight for the university was capturing the 1990 outdoor national title, but there have been dozens of other strong, top 10 finishes. In the indoor games in 1996, OBU set a record with seven national event championships, but came up 8 points shy of Azusa Pacific for the team title.

OBU has made a name for itself in the relay events, capturing titles in such major competitions as the NAIA National Meets, the Texas Relays and the Drake Relays. The Bison, hailing from a school of less than 2,000 students, have annually outperformed some of the biggest schools in the NCAA.

The history of OBU track includes a world record holder and five Olympians. In 1936, Sam Allen ran the 60 yard high hurdles in 7.4 seconds to set the world standard. That same year, Harold Cagle represented the United States in the 4x400 relay, winning the silver medal at the historic 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

OBU's four other Olympians have represented their home nations. In the 1968 games in Mexico City, Pat McMahon represented Ireland in the marathon while his Bison teammate, Willie Rios, ran the 1500 meters for Puerto Rico. Judex Lefou ran in Seoul in 1988 and in Barcelona in 1992 for Mauritius while Desire Pierre-Louis also represented that nation in Atlanta in 1996

Today, OBU owns the NAIA records in several indoor events. Sheldon Edwards ran the 400 meters in 47.47 seconds in 1994. That same year, Darren Reid set a pentathlon record with 4014 points, including a pentathlon record of 7-2.25 in the high jump. Pierre-Louis established the record in the 600 meters in 1998, claiming the title in 1:17.92.
