 OBU Softball History

Softball began at Oklahoma Baptist University in 1976 and hit its first peak in the early 1980s after the first four seasons saw OBU claim a total of 23 wins.

Carla Settles led OBU to the AIAW National Tournament in 1980, batting .376 in Coach Kathy Welter's first season. OBU finished 16-8 and set the bar for the successful teams that would follow.

Becky Carter became OBU's first female All-American in 1982, leading the softball team to its first NAIA National Tournament appearance and a 28-16 record. The Lady Bison went 3-2 in the tournament and finished third.

It took 20 years for OBU to regain that form, but the 2002 edition won a school-record 43 games and placed fourth in the national tournament behind pitcher Kena Freeman and a roster full of hitters. Freeman and Alissa Baxter fashioned a season ERA of 0.60. The 2003 team became OBU's first to ever go to back-to-back NAIA championship tournaments and took seventh.

Coach Pam Fink guided the team to both of the tournament appearances in the 21st century and has the distinction of being the school's all-time leader in coaching wins among women's sports.
