Coates, a graduate from the University of Tulsa, spent three years as OBU’s assistant coach before taking the helm to begin the 2007 season.
“Coach Coates has been with us for the last three years as the assistant coach and I have been impressed with his work ethic, his soccer knowledge, and his ability to relate to the players,” said OBU Athletic Director Norris Russell. “We have made some impressive progress since we started soccer three years ago and we look for Coach Coates to continue to build our soccer tradition at OBU.”
Coates succeeds Marcelo Galvao, who was the program’s first coach. Galvao resigned in May.
“I’m extremely excited about taking over the program,” Coates said. “It’s a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it.”
The OBU men’s soccer team has one trip to the NAIA Tournament already under its belt and the women’s program has been close to reaching the national tournament twice.
“Our style won’t be different,” said Coates. “We’ll still do the things that OBU soccer has become synonymous with. We’ll tweak a few things and try to progress and take it to the next level.”
Coates played soccer at Tulsa and graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He received his master’s degree in education from Bethel College in Tennessee.
After college, Coates played in England on club and professional teams. He joined OBU after a year as a volunteer assistant at Oklahoma Christian University.
