2008-09 Cheerleading Workshop and Tryout Schedule

Open to all: current students, incoming students, male or female.

Required workshops are April 3 AND April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Noble Arena. You must attend both to try out.
TRYOUT IS AT 10 A.M., SATURDAY, APRIL 5, IN NOBLE ARENA.

Our workshops and tryouts are open to all incoming freshmen, transfers, current OBU students, and returning cheerleaders. Tryouts are once a year, usually around the first of April. Workshops begin on Thursday evening and culminate with tryouts on Saturday afternoon. All cheer and pom material is taught during the workshops.

*While jumps and tumbling are a viable part of tryouts, tumbling is not a requirement.

Requirements include:

  1. Attend the three training workshops prior to the actual day of tryouts.
  2. Be passing all classes at the time of tryouts.
  3. Provide proof of grade point average.
  4. Provide proof of coverage by medical insurance.
  5. Provide a letter of recommendation from an academic professional knowledgeable of your character, cheerleading or leadership qualities, and academic abilities, if you are not currently an OBU student.
  6. Sign the Acknowledgment of Risk form enclosed in packet.
  7. Interview with the cheerleading coach during the workshop dates.

**Transfer and Freshman Candidates: Please send the required documents (#3, 4, 5, & 6) in advance.

If you are planning to tryout and are coming from out of town, we will be glad to assist you with housing arrangements for the time you are here. We have designed the workshop and tryout times to accommodate those of you who may need to travel. It is our hope that you will be able to use Friday to visit the campus, meet and talk with faculty and students, and in general become more familiar with OBU and the Shawnee community. Tryouts are open and family members are invited to attend.

While we still do not have scholarships or financial assistance to offer, cheerleading at OBU will require very little out-of-pocket expense. You will be asked to purchase socks, and perhaps food on some road trips, but those should be the majority of your expenditures.

The major requirements for our squad are maintenance of a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a sincere interest in our program. Squad members are selected by a panel of qualified judges. I also want to share that we have Colossians 3:23 as our squad goal: that we will work to glorify God and not ourselves.

We are excited about your interest in the cheerleading program at OBU. I would be more than happy to answer your questions, and look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in the very near future.
