What makes an OBU Leisure Services Management Sports Ministry degree special?

OBU offers a distinctive liberal arts education which prepares the students for a number of possibilities after the undergraduate years. The Sports Ministry degree is based on the OBU liberal arts curriculum, but offers a well rounded experience into the new and ever growing world of sports ministry programming. We find that our students are well prepared for any number of employment or graduate school opportunities.

What are OBU grads doing with their Leisure Services Management Sports Ministry degrees?

Many of our graduates are working in the ministry field in the area of sport. For instance, we have had former graduates employed with Athletes in Action. Many others combine the Sports Ministry degree with Youth Ministry and are employed as church staff members and organize programs for Family Life Centers. Other groups we work with are Upward International and Sports Ministry International.

What courses can I take?

Beginning as early as the sophomore year, we like to place students into observation Practicum classes where they are able to "shadow" professionals in their desired profession. Also, the Junior or Senior year, we often place students into internship positions where they can gain further insight into the profession. These internships have varied from Church Internships to working with Super Bowl Host Committee, Final Four Host Committees, and other sports ministry areas.

What do OBU Leisure Services Management Sports Ministry faculty specialize in?

The KALS faculty are a diverse group. We all wear many hats including sports administration, coaching, and sports ministry. The gentleman who works primarily with the Sports Ministry students (Dr. Bill Buchanan) is one of the leaders and pioneers in the Sports Ministry and Church Recreation fields. He literally travels throughout the nation speaking in churches and leading church youth celebrations. Also, he works with many of the summer camps, supplying workers and programming for them.

Departmental extras:

Because of Dr. Buchanan's contacts, students have the opportunity for Sports Ministry trips (Ecuador, Brazil, the Bahamas, etc.) and the opportunity to work with camps throughout the nations.
