My degree options:
What makes an OBU Exercise and Sports Science Pre-Allied Health degree special?
We have many students pursuing this degree many of whom have differing career goals for working in the Pre-Allied Health Field. The various options include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physicians Assistant, Nutrition and Sports Nutrition, Chiropractic, Radiology, and we have actually had some students with this major go on to medical school. What is special about this degree at OBU is that we have the flexibility to tailor the degree to get the prerequisites that a particular students needs for his or her interest area. We have found that an OBU education prepares the students well to go further and complete the advanced or professional degrees.
What are OBU grads doing with their Exercise and Sports Science Pre-Allied Health degrees?
We have students employed in all of the above. Our students have successfully completed professional schools (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physicians Assistant, etc.) literally all over the nation and are currently successfully working in those fields. We have Physical Therapists, for instance, who own PT clinics or are working in clinical and/or sports medicine fields.
What courses can I take?
Beginning as early as the sophomore year, we like to place students into observation Practicum classes where they are able to "shadow" professionals in their desired profession. Also, the Junior or Senior year, we often place students into internship positions where they can gain further insight into the profession. Other "cool" classes include those which study the movement sciences very much in depth. These include Functional Human Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology and Biomechanics, Motor Learning, etc.
What do OBU Exercise and Sports Science Pre-Allied Health faculty specialize in?
The KALS faculty are a diverse group. We all wear many hats including sports administration, coaching, and sports ministry. In addition to that, the KALS faculty are well equipped to teach the Movement sciences classes with up to date technology.
The "shadowing" and internship opportunities have been mentioned previously. Also, we offer the students the opportunity to do practical work in our athletic training room and get experience with sports injuries, rehab, etc.
