Dr. Mark McClellan became dean of the Herschel H. Hobbs College of Theology and Ministry at OBU in 2009. McClellan’s career has included work as a College and Seminary Professor and Administrative Lead, Missionary, U.S. Army Infantry Officer, and Trial Lawyer. Before arriving at OBU, he served as professor of theology and missions at Boyce College in Louisville, Kentucky from 2004 to 2009. He was associate professor of theology and ethics, and director of the Arizona campus of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary from 2000-2004.
Prior to his work in higher education, McClellan served as a church planter/developer with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist convention from 1983-1998, primarily in Guatemala, Central America. There he and his family served among the Maya/Quiche people and in Guatemala City, the largest urban area in Central America. Part of that time he was also assigned to Central Asia. He has served as a North American Missionary, planting Hispanic churches in Oklahoma, Arizona, and Indiana, while serving as a college and seminary professor and administrative leader. He served as the church extension specialist with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and lead consultant to form the BGCO’s Robert Haskins School of Leadership from 1998 to December 1999. McClellan also served as a minister of evangelism and a senior pastor in Oklahoma churches.
McCellan preaches frequently in Oklahoma Baptist churches, including Spanish speaking churches in Oklahoma as well as in other states. He has been a frequent conference speaker and presenter, and has written a variety of training materials for missions and evangelism activities. He is the co-author of a missiology textbook written in Spanish, which is being used in Latin America and the United States.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, McClellan earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Cincinnati in 1971, including two years of study at Arizona State University. He also earned a Juris doctorate degree from the School of Law at Oklahoma City University in 1977. He practiced law as a trial lawyer with firms in Arizona from 1978-1983 before beginning a career in missionary service. He earned a master of divinity degree from Southwestern in 1983, and he earned a Ph.D. in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2000.
McClellan served in the United States Army on active duty from 1971-1975 and active reserve in the Army from 1975-1977. During active duty, he served in Latin America in the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command and with the 101st Airborne Division. He served as the operations officer with the 12th Special Forces Group, and he was an army infantry captain, airborne, ranger and Special Forces.
He and his wife Cindy have three sons and nine grandchildren. Their oldest son, Joshua, is a Pastor in Pryor, Oklahoma and a Ph.D. student. Their middle son, Jeremy, is a student at OBU, and their youngest son, Jared, serves as a Worship Leader in a church in Enid, Oklahoma.
