Purpose Oklahoma Baptist University's Ministry Training Institute (MTI) was established in 1983 to offer adults desiring to become better equipped to serve in their congregation the opportunity to take college-level courses in Bible and related Christian subjects.
Courses in the MTI program are designed to help develop informed, enlightened, and sensitive Christian leaders. MTI centers are located throughout the state of Oklahoma as well as in various states outside of Oklahoma.
Spring 2008 MTI Course Offerings Accreditation The MTI is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools which means that its program has the same accreditation standards as OBU's on-campus programs. The Institute operates with the approval of the University's board of trustees. Those who teach MTI courses are required to have at least a master's degree from a Southern Baptist seminary and approval by the dean of OBU's School of Christian Service. College-level curriculum materials and teaching aids used in MTI courses are written by faculty members from the School of Christian Service.
Admission Requirements One must be at least 23 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED certificate to be admitted into the MTI program. Official copies of one's high school transcript or the GED certificate, as well as transcripts from all colleges or universities attended must be sent directly to the OBU registrar immediately after enrollment. A limited number of credit hours may be transferred from other accredited colleges or universities if they meet OBU requirements, and are not part of another completed degree. No more than 16 hours from the seminary extension department college-level program or similar accredited correspondence may be transferred to the diploma and associate of arts degree. A maximum of 28 hours may be transferred to the bachelor of arts degree. Variations in these policies must be approved in writing by the dean of the School of Christian Service at OBU.
Programs of Study Course credit earned through MTI classes can be applied toward a diploma in Christian studies, an associate of arts degree, or a bachelor of arts degree from OBU. General education courses required in the A.A. and B.A. degrees are not offered through MTI study. Students may complete those courses on OBU's Shawnee campus or transfer them from another accredited college or university. (See the OBU catalog for restrictions on transfer credit.) Course substitutions must be approved in writing by the director of off-campus programs. To successfully complete the diploma, A.A. or B.A. program, one must have an overall grade point average of 2.0 with no grade lower than C in all religion and applied ministry courses. Cost Tuition for the MTI program is considerably less than tuition on campus. Call the MTI Office at OBU (405)878-2230 for the current rate. Books and materials are not included in the price of tuition. All fees must be paid at the local MTI center at the time of enrollment. There is a $25 enrollment fee each semester.
Financial Aid OBU provides a scholarship for members of cooperating Oklahoma Southern Baptist Churches who are ordained, licensed, or who have notified their churches that they have accepted God's call into vocational Christian ministry.
To receive this scholarship, students must have a copy to their license or ordination certificate on file in the MTI Office. Students who are neither licensed n
or ordained must have their church send a letter certifying that they have made public their acceptance of God's call into vocational Christian ministry to the MTI Office.
Administration Dr. Michael Wilson serves as coordinator for OBU's Ministry Training Institute.
Directors from the Baptist associations select courses to be taught, recommend instructors, and set the time and place for classes in their associations.
