Dr. Terry James joined OBU in 2008 after 39 years in public education as a classroom teacher, building administrator, and central office administrator. He instructs in the foundational education courses of human development, educational psychology, classroom management, and assessment.
Dr. James began as a classroom teacher in English in Indiana and Oklahoma and then served as assistant principal for four years. He then spent one year as Director of Planning and Personnel at Southern Arkansas University before returning to McAlester as Assistant Superintendent in charge of curriculum and instruction. He was then Superintendent of Durant, Oklahoma schools from 2004-08.
Dr. James served as state president for the Oklahoma Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development in 1992-93 and chaired the Oklahoma Central Office Personnel organization until it was incorporated into the CCOSA structure in the 1990’s.
Dr. James has been married for 39 years to Becky, an elementary teacher who was selected McAlester Teacher–of-the Year in 1994. They have two sons, both of whom graduated from OBU. Aaron has completed his Ph. D and teaches religion at Cedarville University in Ohio. He and his wife, Jessica, also an OBU graduate, have two daughters, Maddie and Callie. Michael, their second son, is principal of the Strother schools and is working on his dissertation in educational leadership through OSU.
