Welcome to the OBU Division of Music --

Our mission, given voice in our divisional purposes statement, says

The OBU Division of Music develops artists and scholars uniquely positioned to thrive in the 21st-century by integrating exceptional performance, academic, and service opportunities with a solid Christian liberal arts foundation.

To achieve this, we provide opportunities for students to perform, both as soloists and collaboratively, and in large and small ensemble opportunities. Study with one of our exceptional private instructors, all highly skilled in their performance area and devoted to undergraduate teaching. Enjoy large choral works? Sing in an oratorio project. Interested in music written before 1700? Play in our collegium musicum. Want to work on your improvisation skills? Consider playing with the Bison Jazz Messengers.

Your academic training will find foundation in a strong core of musicianship courses, including a four-semester music theory sequence designed to support and ultimately enhance your understanding of the music you and your major professor will select for your solo work. Find the most historically-informed way to perform your repertoire in our four-semester music history sequence. Your Christian liberal arts training in OBU’s robust core curriculum will only augment your understanding of what it means to be a Christian musician.

Use your skills in service. The division provides ways for you to reach out through music and serve the OBU community, central Oklahoma, and even more global dreams. Teach children in our community Preparatory Program. Take your skills out and find a local church to plug into. Work with students at an area school. Travel to India, China, or anywhere else with an OBU trip. There’s no limit to what you can do.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Kristen Stauffer Todd, Ph.D.
Professor of Music History
