Dr. Terry James joined Oklahoma Baptist University after 39 years in public education as a classroom teacher, building administrator, and central office administrator. He instructs in the core courses of human development, educational psychology, classroom management, and measurement.
He was an assistant principal at Puterbaugh Middle School in McAlester, Oklahoma, before spending one year as Director of Planning and Personnel at Southern Arkansas University. He returned to McAlester as Assistant Superintendent in charge of curriculum and instruction, plus most federal programs for nineteen years. His last responsibility was as Superintendent of the Durant, Oklahoma school system from 2004-08.
Dr. James served as the state president for the Oklahoma Association of Curriculum and Instruction, OASCD, in 1992-93, and chaired the Oklahoma Central Office Personnel organization until it was incorporated into the CCOSA structure in the late 1990's.
Dr. James also served on numerous advisory commitees, including the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s School Improvement Committee, on the state Title 1 Committee, on Superintendent Garrett’s Superintendent Advisory Committee, as grant reader, and the development of the state Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test Program, OCCTP.
Dr. James has been married for 36 years to Becky, an elementary teacher whose experience was primarily in first through third grades. They have two sons, both of whom graduated from OBU. Aaron is completing his dissertation at Dayton University and teaches religion at Cedarville University in the Dayton area. He is married to another OBU graduate, Jessica Gibson, and they have one child, Madeleine Claire. Michael, their second son, teaches and coaches in the Choctaw-Nicoma Park school district and is in the doctoral program at OSU.
