Biology

The OBU Biology Department strives to provide a Christian learning environment where faith and knowledge contribute to an enhanced sense of curiosity, appreciation, and responsibility toward the living world.

You will find a variety of high-quality laboratory and field experiences to meet your diverse interests and career goals. You will be prepared for rewarding careers in the biological sciences, including medicine and dentistry, academics, and research.

A list of potential career opportunities for Biology graduates (including those who are concentrating on Pre-medical Studies) are listed below.

Pre-Medical Studies

OBU maintains a 95-100 percent acceptance rate to medical school each year. You will graduate from OBU prepared to become physicians and biomedical researchers at the top of their specialities.

At OBU, classes teach you to ask questions and find solutions. Labs are open-ended investigations that require you to discern. People skills are also essential. You will need to interact skillfully with each patient, concerned for their whole person. OBU provides hands-on experiences that ready you for this task. Integrity is also important. The highest ethical conduct must be ingrained in your daily actions. OBU provides a context where faculty and staff seek to uphold such high standards.

Your specific area of study is not critical at the undergraduate level, although medical schools specify certain prerequisite courses in the sciences. For this reason, most students major in one of the sciences. Most medical schools require the following courses for admission: inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, biology, and English. In addition, they may require social sciences such as psychology and sociology and mathematics. You will also need good scores on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), which is usually take in the spring of your junior year.
