English

OBU's English program is designed to provide you with skills which will enable you to analyze literature and investigate its relationship to culture. It exposes you to significant works in British, American, and Continental literature and to the modes of criticism appropriate for interpreting literature. It also provides opportunities in the history and nature of language or in the process of creative and/or expository writing to increase understanding in these areas.

As a result of your study, you not only gain an appreciation for the literature produced by Western culture, but also increase your ability to think critically and to express your thoughts in a clear and concise prose style. Students are thus prepared to enter a variety of vocational fields or to continue their studies in a graduate program.

Scriblerus
Each fall Sigma Tau Delta sponsors a creative writing contest, in which all OBU students may submit poetry or fiction to be judged by OBU faculty and alumni. The end result is Scriblerus, OBU's own literary journal, which is consistently acknowledged by the International Society as an outstanding publication.
