Careers in Psychology

There are many career opportunities available to students who have a degree in psychology, whether it be a bachelor's or a graduate degree.

Students with a bachelor's degree in psychology often find work in helping professions, but are by no means limited to these careers.  The work that you do in psychology will provide you with valuable skills of communication and will teach you to think critically in whatever your situation.  These are some careers students have chosen with their bachelor's degree in psychology.

The pursuit of graduate work on psychology only furthers the opportunities for career choices.  If you obtain either a master's degree or a Ph.D. in psychology, you can be prepared to work in one of the many fields of psychology, including Clinical, Cognitive, Counseling, Marriage and Family, School, and others.  You might choose one of the following careers.

Careers in Family Psychology

Students who major in Family Psychology have many choices of careers.

Both the Psychology and Family Psychology degrees at OBU prepare students for a wide range of jobs.  Generally, however, students who choose a major of Family Psychology are interested in the counseling or therapy aspects of society.  Required courses reflect this emphasis, including Family Communication, Basic Counseling Skills, Family Therapy and Practice, and others.

With a bachelor's degree in family psychology, students may wish to pursue one of these careers:

Customer Relations
Residential Youth Counselor
Youth Corrections Officer

Students who pursue a graduate degree in a field related to Family Psychology expand the list of available choices immensely.  If you obtain either a master's degree or become an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), you can be prepared to work in one of the many fields of psychology, including Counseling, Marriage and Family, School, and others.  You might choose one of the following careers.

Private Practitioner
Marriage and Family Therapist
School Psychologist
School Counselor
Consumer Psychology Consultant
Market Research
