Dr. Tony Litherland’s interests in politics and the media, Congress, Latin American politics, language policies, and virtue have played an important role in his publications, presentations, and panel discussions on such subjects as “Analysis of the Linguistic Ideological Debate and the Challenge to Save Bilingualism” and “Virtues, Values and Vices: The Need for Virtue in a good Society.” Over the years, Dr. Litherland has traveled to more than 25 countries in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. He has received numerous awards including Carl Albert Congressional Research Fellow, 2002 Oklahoma Political Science Association Political Science Teacher of the Year, and OBU’s Seven Who Care Award for 1999. In the political arena, he is the Democratic Chairman for Pottawatomie County. Dr. Litherland is a team leader for the Hispanic Mission in Shawnee and Director of Education for the Boys State Program under the American Legion. At OBU, he acts as adviser for the Young Democrats, the Political Science Club, Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature, and the Chess Club. He is an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee and participates in frequent mission trips both abroad and in the U. S. He is married to Dr. Lucrecia Litherland, Associate Professor of Language at OBU. They have four children, Eric, Heidi, Raquel, and Kelly, and one grandchild, Jordan.
